16 Assam Opposition Parties Warn Prime Minister Modi of Potential Volatility if CAA Implemented

top-news

Amid escalating tensions surrounding the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA, the United Opposition Forum of Assam (UOFA), comprising 16 opposition parties, has penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concerns over the potential volatility that could arise if the contentious act is implemented in the state.

The UOFA has highlighted the resurgence of public resistance against the CAA, particularly following Union Home Minister Amit Shah's announcement regarding the notification and implementation of the act. In response, the forum has vowed to organize a series of protests, including the 'gherao' of the administrative headquarters in Guwahati, if the CAA is enforced.

Central to the opposition's objections is the violation of the Assam Accord of 1985, which stipulates that individuals, regardless of religious affiliation, who migrated from Bangladesh to Assam after March 1971 would be deemed non-citizens. The accord, considered pivotal for safeguarding the cultural and socio-economic fabric of Assamese society, is perceived to be jeopardized by the implementation of the CAA.

In their missive to Prime Minister Modi, UOFA underscored the deep-seated apprehensions among the Assamese populace regarding the adverse impact of the CAA on their cultural heritage and identity. The forum emphasized that the enactment of the CAA would undermine the historic Assam Accord and urged the prime minister to address these concerns promptly, preferably during his forthcoming visit to the state.

Furthermore, the opposition parties have sought intervention from the state governor and the president to prevent the implementation of the CAA, labeling it as unconstitutional and antithetical to national interests. The UOFA comprises a coalition of prominent political entities, including the Congress, Raijor Dal, and the Aam Aadmi Party, among others.

As tensions continue to escalate, the opposition's concerted efforts to challenge the implementation of the CAA underscore the deep-rooted anxieties and apprehensions prevailing within Assam's political landscape.
